Archaeologists
in Egypt have discovered 27 sarcophagi (steel coffins) in Saqqara, a massive
necropolis South of Cairo. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt had
announced earlier this month that the archaeologists had discovered over a
dozen sarcophagi and the ministry further announced on Sunday on their Facebook
page that 14 sarcophagi were discovered.
According to
the ministry, some of the coffins retained their original colour and the
ministry said that a small cache of artifacts was also found alongside the
Sarcophagi. In 2019, a similar excavation resulted in discovery of 30 coffins.
In ancient
Egypt, the royalty, noble men and women were buried in steel coffins decorated
with several symbols belonging to that time. The ministry said that it hopes to
discover further artifacts at the site.
