New Delhi: India crossed the seven million coronavirus cases
with 74,535 new cases and 921 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours. India still
hold the second place in the world rankings in terms of total number of
coronavirus infections. The United States is ranked one closing onto eight
million cases and more than 200,000 people have died so far in the US. India is
followed by Brazil as it recorded more than five million cases so far. The top
five ranks are currently occupied by the United States, India, Brazil, Russia and
Colombia. There are a few positives for India in the current pandemic environment
even though it is yet to be seen how longs these positives would remain. There
is a slight dip in new cases being recorded over the past two weeks in India. During
mid-September, the number of cases per day hovered around 90,000 cases. Currently,
India has been recording around 70,000 new cases per day. India is also posting
great number of recoveries, despite a humongous population and has more
recoveries than the United States and Brazil.
Still, there is a long journey to travel before Indian can
say it passed the first wave. The experts warned that the coronavirus behaviour
was utterly unpredictable, and public should exercise caution at the highest
level in order to bring down the curve. India will soon enter the festive
season and winter which may turn out be hugely problematic for the country. Infectious
diseases tend to maximise during colder temperatures, and mass gatherings
during the festival or in the days leading up to the festival may become
super-spreader events. Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are
responsible for 46% of all coronavirus cases in India. There has reports of
recent spikes in the new cases in Kerala. Internationally, France, England,
Spain are seeing a spike in the new cases as Europe braces itself for a second
wave.
