The farm
bills which have been described by Prime Minister Narender Modi as a “watershed
moment” for Indian farmers continue to enrage opposition parties resulting in
protests, sit-ins, arrests across the country. Three significant far bills have
been approved and passed by both upper and lower houses of Parliament and the
bills have also been approved by President Ram Nath Kovind.
What are the
three farm bills?
1: Farmers
Produce Trade and Commerce Bill
2: Farmers
Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill
3: Essential
Commodities Bill
On Monday,
protests occurred across India sternly opposing the bills. The opposition
parties argued that these bills will weaken Indian farmers. Protests occurred in
states of Telangana, Punjab and Haryana where several farmer organizations and
opposition parties assembled and protested. Police were deployed to contain the
protests and later arrested several protesters. Congress was one of most vocal
opposers to the passed bills. The NDA government’s ally Shiromani Akali Dal Party
has pulled out and joined with the opposition parties protesting the bills.
